Music Meets Ecology: A Creative Atelier on Sound, Sustainability, and Environmental Awareness
As part of our ongoing INTERACTION project, both Omnia and Almyras are excited to present a unique and inspiring atelier that brought together music, ecological thinking and sustainability, offering students a hands-on, imaginative experience where creativity and environmental awareness go hand in hand.
The workshop was designed to help students explore how music can serve as a powerful tool for ecological awareness. Through guided discussion and interactive activities, students developed an understanding of how sustainable and eco-friendly practices can be applied not just in daily life, but also in the art of music and music production.
Throughout the workshop, students:
- Explored the connection between music and the environment, thinking critically about sustainability in both the creation and production of music.
- Created handmade instruments using recyclable and natural materials like plastic bottles, glass, aluminium, paper, wood, and stones.
- Composed and performed an original “sound story” using their self-made instruments and body percussion, around environmental themes.
- Learned about program music, where sound is used to tell a story or paint a scene, drawing inspiration from classical composers and nature-inspired compositions.
The workshop began in the classroom, where students, led by their music teacher, Maria Zannetou reflected on the environmental issues that matter to them most. They had dived into discussions about ecology and sustainability, connecting these ideas to the world of music.
They have listened to selected pieces of program music, analyzing how composers have used instruments and sounds to portray natural landscapes, animals, or environmental concerns. This set the stage for students to begin composing their own music with an environmental message.
🎵 In the hands-on phase of the workshop, students have collected recyclable and organic materials that can generate sound. These everyday items were transformed into musical instruments, allowing students to experiment with sound qualities and build their own unique toolkits for storytelling.
Students were then divided into two groups, each receiving a different environmental story:
- One celebrating the beauty and harmony of nature.
- The other addressing the impact of environmental destruction.
Using their instruments, body sounds, and voices, each group composed and performed their sound story, bringing their assigned theme to life through music.
🌍 This workshop was more than just a music lesson, it was an invitation for students to become creative changemakers, learning to express their environmental concerns through sound. By integrating artistic expression with ecological awareness, we're empowering the next generation to think deeply about sustainability and to use their talents to inspire positive change.
